The 1880-82 circumnavigation carried the future George V from Melbourne to Sydney, where he reportedly saw a supposed phantom ship that may have been an ordinary merchant vessel. Inconstant diverted to Simon's Town for possible service in the First Boer War, but hostilities ended before she arrived. On the return voyage, the crew stopped a serious fire by flooding the after compartments. The squadron then went to Egypt, where Inconstant took part in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the bombardment of Alexandria before landing sailors for operations ashore.
