Why a worked-up helicopter unit gets the hard jobs

845 carried so much operational work because it was the available, trained, and fully worked-up Commando helicopter unit.

Notes

A worked-up unit has trained as a team, mastered its systems and doctrine, and shown that it can operate under severe exercise pressure. Flag Officer Sea Training puts ships through deliberately punishing scenarios, and squadrons or carrier air groups need equivalent preparation before they become viable operational units. As the first worked-up Commando helicopter squadron, 845 received a disproportionate share of real deployments. In 1965, 848 relieved it so the squadron could return to Culdrose, change from Wessex HC1 to HC5 helicopters, and deploy again to Borneo. The sequence shows the cycle of operations, conversion, training, and renewed availability.
