How was William Moffett commemorated? — USS Akron; The World's First Purpose Built Flying Aircraft… at 53:19

Question

Should USS Essex have been named after Rear Admiral William Moffett?

Short answer

Moffett had already received a major naval-aviation memorial in Moffett Field, Macon's original home base.

Notes

Moffett already received substantial commemoration in California. Moffett Field served as Macon's original home base and preserved the admiral's association with naval aviation. The site endured in altered form as a federal airfield and NASA research location after the naval air station closed. Its name tied Moffett's memory directly to infrastructure created for the rigid-airship programme.
