How William III's accession weakened the East India Company's position

Dynastic change exposed the East India Company to a difficult Dutch alliance and political support for competitors at home.

Notes

William III's accession forced the East India Company into an uneasy alliance with its commercial rival, the Dutch VOC. At home, the Company's close association with James II also damaged its position. The VOC carried much of the fighting against French establishments in India, but Whig support for rival traders challenged the English Company's monopoly. A new company formed in 1698 to take over its patent.
