Agnew's career moved through Deptford, Pegasus, Corfu, Aurora, Force K, Dido, and the gunnery establishment Excellent before reaching HMS Vanguard. His central qualification was repeated success with fast forces expected to operate independently from Malta. That experience led to his selection as Vanguard's first captain and later to the use of the battleship as his flag. The prestigious final sea command recognized an officer who had proved effective with smaller cruiser-destroyer formations.
