Why two-seat fighters favored combat air patrol

A second observer, more fuel, and longer endurance made larger two-seat fighters attractive for standing patrols despite continued interest in interceptors.

Notes

The visual-warning system's limits encouraged renewed interest in larger two-seat fighters. A second crew member improved lookout and reconnaissance capacity, while additional fuel allowed the aircraft to remain overhead longer. The Royal Navy did not abandon the interceptor, as the Sea Gladiator demonstrates, but the endurance fighter offered a different answer to sustained fleet defense.
