The objection to the phrase "this is what I was taught at school" is not an attack on teachers or school history. Teachers have limited time and budgets, while history competes with every other school subject. A course has to make difficult material manageable by selecting a small number of points. The BBC's "Bitesize" label provides a useful analogy: pupils receive an intelligible portion rather than every connected detail. Trouble begins when that introductory account is treated as the whole of history.
