Why nuclear merchant ships remain rare

Merchant nuclear power has remained exceptional because only unusual routes and cargo roles can justify its demanding maintenance and operating model.

Notes

By 2023, only four nuclear merchant vessels had operated outside the more common icebreaker role. The American NS Savannah was the first, while Sevmorput was the sole example still in service at the time of the video. Sevmorput is a nuclear-powered lighter carrier whose cargo can be handled where port facilities are limited or unreliable. Northern routes create the unusual endurance requirement that can make such a vessel useful. Even there, lengthy maintenance periods show how difficult it is for a private operator to sustain the model without a compelling mission.
