Vittorio Cuniberti was already famous for publishing the idea of an all-big-gun battleship. Italy then built Dante Alighieri as its first ship of the type. Neither contribution displaced the name attached to the British ship that made the break with earlier battleships unmistakable. The public label for an innovation need not preserve the name of its first theorist or every parallel national development.

Why Dreadnought became the generic name
Cuniberti published the all-big-gun concept and Dante Alighieri became Italy's first example, yet HMS Dreadnought supplied the name adopted worldwide.
