Why carrier homing beacons mattered

An introduction to the beacon systems that gave Fleet Air Arm aircraft a way to find a carrier after dark or far out at sea.

Notes

Carrier beacons addressed a basic operational problem: an aircraft returning alone might have neither a visible ship nor a fixed reference point. The difficulty became acute at night, in poor visibility, or after the carrier had moved since the aircraft departed. Radio navigation made sustained night flying practical by giving aircrew a way to locate an otherwise invisible ship. The familiar six-minute explanation compresses several generations of equipment into one introductory model. This opening sets out the problem before the video distinguishes the Type 72X, 72DM, and 72DP systems.
