Why Britain benefited when the High Seas Fleet disappeared

Dividing German capital ships among the victors would have strengthened rival navies, spread German technology, and forced Britain to plan against larger foreign fleets.

Question

Why did Britain prefer the German High Seas Fleet to disappear rather than be divided among the victors?

Short answer

Distribution would have strengthened rival navies, spread German technology, and increased the forces Britain had to match.

Notes

Britain did not want the former German battleships distributed among the United States, France, Italy, and other victors. Each transfer would raise another navy's strength, disclose German technical features, and compel the Royal Navy to plan against larger totals. Britain also had little interest in adding German ships to its own fleet because the other victors opposed making the world's largest navy still stronger. Scuttling therefore served British balance-of-power interests even though Royal Navy personnel made a limited effort to stop it and a minor firefight occurred. Destroying a defeated fleet and sharing it among the victors would create very different postwar naval balances.
