Whirlwinds, anti-submarine work, and the Suez helicopter assault

The postwar squadron used Westland Whirlwinds for anti-submarine and troop-lift duties, then carried Royal Marines ashore by helicopter during the Suez Crisis.

Notes

845 returned after the war as a helicopter squadron flying successive marks of the Westland Whirlwind. These aircraft supported anti-submarine warfare while the unit developed its troop-lift role. During the Suez Crisis, 845 carried Royal Marines ashore from a carrier and demonstrated how helicopters could deliver an amphibious assault force. The operation connects the squadron's anti-submarine lineage with the Commando lift specialisation that soon came to define it.
