Chapter · 13:45-15:42

What makes a dry dock genuinely usable

Length and beam are only the first test: access, refit availability, emergency capacity, local industry, security, and accommodation decide whether a dock can support a warship.

Notes

A large empty graving dock is of limited military value if approaches are difficult, repair firms are absent, or emergency users cannot displace commercial work. Planned refits and emergency repairs impose different availability demands on a facility that may also serve commercial customers. Site security and accommodation for the personnel protecting and maintaining an arriving ship are part of the same calculation. These constraints turn a nominal docking space into a practical force-readiness question.
