What is a VLS cell?

It is a compact launch installation that manages launch forces, provides missile data and electrical interfaces, and monitors weapon status.

A VLS cell is a condensed launch installation rather than a passive storage box. It must contain or vent the effects of launch according to whether the missile uses a hot or cold system. Electrical and data connectors prepare the weapon with the information it needs. Monitoring equipment then reports the status of the missile and cell so the combat system knows whether they are ready.
