Westland turns licensed designs into British capability

British license production uses an American design to preserve domestic helicopter manufacturing, maintenance, and development skills.

Notes

Britain decided it could not design every helicopter it needed, so Westland acquired proven foreign designs for domestic production. This kept the industrial knowledge needed to manufacture, support, and modify British aircraft. Westland and Sikorsky used each generation as the basis for further improvements. The Whirlwind became part of the evolutionary line leading to the larger Westland Wessex, so licensed production supported later development as well as immediate procurement.
