Welding as weight saving and industrial learning

Algérie's welded construction saved weight, while its careful adoption shows how engineers tested a developing technique alongside established riveting.

Notes

Welding offered a lighter and in some circumstances stronger structure than riveting, creating displacement that could be spent elsewhere in the design. The technique was still developing in the 1930s, and riveting remained the better choice for particular joints or loads. Engineers had to learn through experience where the newer method worked. The same pattern of technical learning applied to Algérie's boilers, turbines, and compact machinery arrangement as the French Navy rebuilt its industrial capability.
