When fewer guns make a stronger battleship design

A conversion that removes a turret may be preferable when it frees weight for fire control, protection, and a more accurate ship.

Notes

The design experiment compares a fifteen-gun ship that cannot hit reliably with a twelve-gun alternative that can. Main-battery count is only one part of fighting power because fire control, stability, armour, and the ability to keep firing all shape the useful weight of fire. Bismarck should also close toward secondary range while its remaining 15-inch ammunition can still support the approach, making range control part of the endurance problem. Fewer barrels can be more valuable when the ship can find the target, stay intact, and use its ammunition under favourable tactical conditions.
