Weapon layout turns redundancy into resilience

CIWS placement and multi-gun turrets show how overlapping coverage and partial capability can keep a damaged warship fighting.

Notes

Resilience means designing a warship to continue operating after damage rather than assuming every system remains perfect. Close-in weapon systems placed port and starboard can leave an entire side uncovered after one loss, while fore-and-aft or triangular layouts preserve more arcs. Multi-gun turrets add complexity but can retain partial firepower when a single gun fails. Both examples recall combat-oriented design practices common before and during the Second World War.
