The Weapon class and shipyard capacity

The Weapon class shows how shipyard size and production capacity can shape a destroyer programme as much as combat capability.

Question

How did the Weapon class compare with the Battle class in cost and capability?

Short answer

The Weapon class was an expensive intermediate destroyer, useful chiefly for the particular yards that could build it.

Notes

The Weapon class occupied an awkward middle ground. It was more capable than a small destroyer, yet expensive for what it delivered. Its procurement value lay partly in using yards that could not efficiently build either several small destroyers or a much larger Battle class. Shipyard capacity can therefore explain an otherwise unconvincing design niche.
