Lansdowne fired two Mark 15 torpedoes at Wasp, but neither exploded. The destroyer then disabled the magnetic influence exploders and set the remaining weapons to a depth of 10 feet. Three more torpedoes were fired, and all three detonated. Wasp nevertheless remained afloat until about 2100, when she sank bow first. The failed first shots and the carrier's continued buoyancy made scuttling a much longer operation than simply firing torpedoes at an abandoned hull.

Mark 15 failures delayed Wasp's scuttling
Two dud Mark 15 torpedoes forced Lansdowne to change its exploder and depth settings, and Wasp remained afloat after three subsequent detonations.
