Wartime necessity changes machinery limits

The pursuit illustrates why a navy may accept engine wear or blast damage in combat that would be forbidden during peacetime operation and training.

Notes

Published ship speeds describe safe, sustainable operation rather than an inviolable mechanical ceiling. In a decisive chase, commanders may accept boiler wear because the ship can be repaired later but the enemy cannot be recaptured once lost. Firing over another turret poses a similar choice: exercises avoid it because blast might damage sighting equipment, while battle can justify the risk. Combat value can therefore override prudent peacetime limits.
