Warspite entered Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in August 1941 for replacement 15-inch guns, additional anti-aircraft weapons, and bridge improvements. New surface and anti-aircraft radar also formed part of the work. She was still in the yard when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. After recommissioning in December, she conducted trials near Vancouver, crossed the Pacific, and received another brief refit at Sydney. She then sailed toward Trincomalee in time to become Admiral Somerville's Eastern Fleet flagship in March 1942.
