A rebuilt Warspite still carries old mechanical problems

Propulsion, steering, and an errant anti-aircraft exercise show the difficult transition from reconstruction to operational flagship.

Notes

Warspite emerged from reconstruction under Captain Victor Crutchley but continued to suffer propulsion and steering faults associated with her older hull and Jutland damage. Delays frustrated Admiral Dudley Pound, especially when sailors aired grievances in national newspapers. Anti-aircraft work-up also brought a dangerous training mishap when a pom-pom crew fired toward the towing aircraft instead of the target. The rounds landed near a Green Howards platoon. A technically improved ship still required disciplined testing and training before returning to service.
