What practically limits the size of a warship

Navigation constraints and the location and capacity of dry docks can limit warship size even when a major canal does not.

Question

Beyond the Panama Canal, what practical factors limit the size of a warship?

Short answer

Constrained-waterway handling and the size, availability, and location of dry docks remain decisive limits.

Notes

Displacement alone does not set the practical limit on warship size. A very large ship must still turn through constrained waterways and reach facilities able to dock her. Dry-dock dimensions matter together with location, because a suitable facility on the wrong side of an operating area may be of little practical use. The Midway-class example shows why clearing one famous canal limit does not remove the wider infrastructure problem.
