Why a fleet needs ships for different roles

Presence ships, fleet escorts, and high-end combatants need different weapons because they occupy different rungs in naval diplomacy.

Notes

Type 31, Type 26, River-class vessels, and historical task groups illustrate why weapon fit should follow the mission. Escorting cruisers, destroyers, and sloops are as important to a task group as its famous capital ships, even when photographs foreground only carriers and battleships. A River-class patrol vessel can provide affordable maritime security and presence without being turned into a full combatant. Type 31 can occupy the next step, while Type 26 or Type 45 signals a more serious commitment. This graduated force structure gives ministers more usable choices in naval diplomacy instead of making every deployment equally escalatory.
