Independent power and the engineers who kept it working

Warrior could move independently of the wind, but her individual machinery demanded specialist knowledge from her engineers.

Notes

Steam power kept Warrior moving when sailing ships were becalmed or struggled against wind and current. Operating the machinery required engineers who knew the individual ship in detail. Each boiler and engine installation had its own characteristics, even as gun manufacture was becoming more standardized. The controls demanded care and understanding from the people working them. Ten rectangular boilers and the trunk engine developed 5,772 indicated horsepower, giving a top speed of 14 knots and a stated range of 2,100 nautical miles at 11 knots.
