Jeremy Bowen's moments of terror amid sustained danger

Continuous danger did not produce continuous fear for Bowen, who remembers brief episodes of terror amid periods when he could work calmly.

Notes

Jeremy Bowen remembers working in Grozny without feeling frightened most of the time, although he considered the city dangerous, appalling, and brutal. He did not regard this calm as proof of unusual bravery and compared it with his anxiety about aggressive motorists in London. He distinguishes brief moments of absolute terror from the rest of his experience in war zones. In his view, continuous fear would make work impossible, so people learn to absorb or ignore much of the danger around them.
