Gunnery spotting and radar patrol

The Walrus spotted naval gunfire at Cape Spartivento and Cape Matapan, but radar-assisted patrol remained the type's more typical duty.

Notes

Gunnery spotting is often treated as the Walrus's principal surface-action role, yet it performed that job in battle on only two identified occasions. Aircraft from Renown and Manchester spotted at Cape Spartivento, while Gloucester used one at Cape Matapan. Both examples occurred in the Mediterranean, giving the type a compact but concrete combat record in fleet gunnery. From March 1941, air-to-surface radar strengthened its ability to patrol and search from individual ships. The same sensor is more often associated with the better-known Swordfish, although the Walrus remained important for isolated shipborne coverage.
