The Type 1936 destroyers used Wagner turbines and high-pressure boilers to produce enormous power when everything worked properly. Steam conditions reached about 1,000 psi and 450 degrees Celsius. Operating these plants was an 'artisanal' occupation, demanding technique and a feel for the particular machinery. Pushing the limits of boiler construction also meant individual plants differed as successive improvements were made.
