Vuelta de Obligado and the limits of superior firepower

Victory at Vuelta de Obligado fails to force the political outcome Britain and France wanted, while the dispute over navigation continues.

Notes

The Anglo-French fleet wins at Vuelta de Obligado without producing the political collapse its intervention sought. The battle is consequently remembered in Argentina as an assertion of sovereignty despite the battlefield defeat. River access is central to the dispute: Rosas bars foreign shipping from routes toward Paraguay, while Britain and France claim freedom of navigation. Some steam-powered vessels assist the expedition, though much of the force still depends on sail. Opening the river is therefore both a military objective and part of the commercial dispute.
