VLS magazines, sea reloads, and peer war

A discussion of hypersonic warfare broadens into missile-magazine depth, the loss of at-sea VLS reloads, and post-Cold War assumptions about short naval engagements.

Notes

Many Western escorts carry fewer launch cells than a peer conflict demands because they were designed for limited engagements after the Cold War. Each launch permanently reduces the ship's available magazine until it can reload. Without practical reload equipment at sea, VLS behaves like a one-use gun magazine during a deployment. Cell count and replenishment therefore determine how long a force can remain in the fight.
