Chapter ยท 44:39-46:05

VLS speed trades away magazine depth

Vertical launch cells expose every missile for rapid use but modern fleets generally cannot replenish those cells while underway.

Notes

The VLS offers immediate access to its carried weapons, yet its ready ammunition is also effectively its entire magazine. Early Mark 41 installations on Ticonderoga-class cruisers reserved cell space for a crane intended to support reloading. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and most later installations did not preserve a practical equivalent. The design choice reflected Cold War expectations that a major conflict would end quickly or escalate to nuclear war before repeated conventional rearming became decisive. Modern ships consequently gain rapid access to every carried missile but generally must leave the operating area to restore that depth after firing.
