VLS provides rapid access to ready missiles but does not make expended cells easy to restore. A traditional launcher-and-magazine arrangement has greater potential for reloading at sea. Modern missiles are delicate, and moving them safely into exposed deck cells on a moving ship has defeated several proposed solutions. Optimizing VLS as a launch mechanism differs from integrating it as a sustainable shipboard magazine. A practical and cost-efficient at-sea reload method would change magazine endurance and the way fleets remain in action.
Notable Point ยท 3:33:16-3:34:04
At-sea reloading is VLS's fleet-level constraint
Vertical launch cells provide excellent firing access, but safely restoring their missile load at sea remains a different and strategically important engineering problem.
