The engagement is described as the first battle between two steam frigates. The Ottoman-Egyptian ship lacked effective stern fire, allowing the more maneuverable Vladimir to stay behind it and fire accurately with little reply. The opposing crew nevertheless kept its ship afloat through roughly three hours of punishment. Steam propulsion removed dependence on wind, while greater speed prevented escape; together those advantages let the Russian ship control the geometry of the fight. The battered prize was eventually taken into Russian service under a new name.
