Why Vindicator experience mattered to the SBD

Canceling an early aircraft can remove the operational experience used to develop its successor.

Question

Would the United States have been better off canceling the Vindicator and Buccaneer and putting their resources into the SBD?

Short answer

The Vindicator part of that proposal is rejected because experience operating it contributed to the SBD's development.

Notes

Operating the Vindicator produced experience that fed into the SBD. Canceling the earlier aircraft assumes that its successor could develop unchanged without those lessons. That is the reason given for rejecting a direct transfer of all Vindicator resources to the later design.
