North Vietnam's highest-scoring fighter pilots were Vietnamese, despite stories that they were secretly Russians. Soviet pilots who assisted with the aircraft learned from Vietnamese experience against American aircraft and carried those lessons home. Practical instruction therefore also flowed from the Vietnamese force to its larger sponsor. Soviet and Chinese assistance was considered critical in supplying and maintaining systems such as command and control, even when direct foreign participation in combat was less important.
