Chapter ยท 10:38-16:18

Vian's destroyers leave convoy duty to find Bismarck

Philip Vian's four Tribals and ORP Piorun race north from convoy duty and take over contact as the cruisers run short of fuel.

Notes

The flotilla includes Cossack, Maori, Sikh, Zulu, and the Polish destroyer Piorun, whose commander is presented as well matched to the Tribals' aggressive culture. Their speed leaves an accompanying cruiser behind and brings them to the hunt just as the shadowing cruisers are nearing their endurance limit. A Catalina points them toward Bismarck, allowing the destroyers to relieve HMS Sheffield and preserve the chase. Vian then treats the summons as an opportunity to harry the battleship rather than merely escort the British battle force.
