Chapter · 1:47:40-1:52:48

Victory's layered battery balanced range and rate of fire

Victory combined long heavy guns low in the hull with shorter, faster-handled weapons above, giving the first rate layered firepower at different ranges.

Notes

Victory's full hull provided a stable platform for a battery with different jobs on each deck. Her lower deck carried 30 long 32-pounders and her middle deck 28 long 24-pounders. Long barrels offered range and accuracy but added weight and took longer to run in and ram during reloading. The upper gun deck's 30 short 12-pounders could be handled and reloaded more rapidly. Standard-pattern guns offered frigates a balance between the long and short types, while a large first rate had room to divide its batteries by task. Short 12-pounders on the quarterdeck, standard 12-pounders on the forecastle, and carronades added further firepower as combat closed. The lower guns could begin engaging at range while the upper weapons supplied a higher rate of fire nearby. A first rate also had space for fast-firing weapons against fireships, though stopping an attacker still depended on hitting it amid the confusion of battle.
