Russia’s 2014 success helped Ukraine adapt for 2022

The disruption of Ukraine’s senior ranks created room for younger innovators, while the earlier attack warned the country to organize before Russia struck again.

Notes

Ukraine’s loss or compromise of many senior officers in 2014 left a smaller top layer and created opportunities for younger personnel to introduce new systems. That organizational opening helped drones and other battlefield adaptations move upward through the force. The Gallipoli comparison shows how an incomplete first effort warned the defender and allowed defenses to mature before the larger attack. A quick success can damage a later campaign by teaching and motivating the opponent while convincing the attacker that the next operation will be equally easy.
