The specialist officers in a Victorian flagship staff

A fleet engineering officer, medical officer, secretary, flag lieutenant, chief of staff, and specialist signal or gunnery officers made up a compact but capable command team.

Notes

A large Victorian flagship might carry a fleet engineering officer with assistants, a fleet medical officer, the admiral's secretary, one or more flag lieutenants, a chief of staff, and senior signal or gunnery specialists. On a smaller staff, one officer could hold two posts, such as a flag lieutenant who also served as the gunnery specialist. Renown needed additional officer accommodation and a few extra sailors, though its staff remained far smaller than a modern headquarters establishment. The roster shows an increasingly specialized service in which individual officers still covered multiple functions.
