Victoria's capsize and Camperdown's survival

Victoria capsized within thirteen minutes, while Camperdown survived through improvised flood control and ships farther back had time to evade.

Notes

Five minutes after the collision, Victoria's bow had sunk about fifteen feet and water was entering through the forward turret's gun ports. The engines remained manned, but hydraulic steering failed and power was unavailable to launch the ship's boats. Bourke went below after impact to inspect the damage and close watertight doors, although those precautions had not been completed before the collision. Victoria capsized within thirteen minutes. The chaplain was last seen trying to rescue the sick, while a survivor described people swept among wreckage in violently disturbed water. Camperdown also flooded through doors left open, but her crew built a cofferdam and divers closed a bulkhead door about ninety minutes later. Ships farther back in the formation had enough time to take evasive action. Tryon remained aboard Victoria and died when she sank.
