Vibration and unexpected system interference

Generators and hull vibration can cause false radar returns even when the equipment worked correctly during shore testing.

Notes

Shore tests cannot reproduce every interaction found in a complete warship. Equipment can function correctly on land and begin to conflict after another shipboard system introduces vibration through the hull. Early radar sets were particularly vulnerable to false positives caused by interactions that designers had not expected. The source could be a generator rather than the main engines, with imperfect bearings creating small vibrations that reached equipment in the superstructure. Sea trials reveal these installation-specific effects because they test the systems together inside the real structure.
