Vian and the Soviet request for White Sea support

Germany's attack on the Soviet Union abruptly moves Vian from coastal-convoy command into planning for British naval support in the White Sea.

Notes

After Germany attacked the Soviet Union, Vian was summoned from HMS Cossack to London for talks with First Sea Lord Dudley Pound and Soviet general Filipp Golikov. The Soviet request concerned British naval help in the White Sea and disruption of German supply traffic along the Norwegian coast. Pound was willing to assemble a force whose composition would depend on available bases and their security. The episode shows how alliance needs could redirect an officer from a local coastal-convoy problem to strategic planning with little warning.
