Maintenance cycles turn fleet numbers into real readiness

Texas's regular overhauls open a broader explanation of why hull numbers, maintenance time, and visible material condition must be considered together.

Notes

Texas's 1929 overhaul illustrates why warships require continual painting, cleaning, repair, and periodic yard work. Surface rust can appear quickly when salt water becomes trapped under paint, even though thick plate does not immediately rust through. A fleet trying to do more with fewer hulls can defer visible upkeep because ships still need time away from operations. Rust streaks and discolored hulls may therefore reveal an overstretched maintenance cycle rather than a crew that is not working hard.
