Chapter · 12:10-14:08

USS Maine as an armoured cruiser and diplomatic signal

Maine's cruiser-like dimensions, speed, and distributed armour made her both an early American armoured cruiser and a visible statement of American interest in Cuba.

Notes

Period labels can place USS Maine between a second-class battleship and an armoured cruiser when she is compared with USS Texas. Her longer hull, higher speed, and armour spread over more area fit the cruiser side of that distinction even though the two ships carried comparable heavy guns. Sending Maine to Havana was an act of naval presence intended to demonstrate American concern for citizens and interests during the Cuban crisis. Her classification and diplomatic employment both mattered before any battle began.
