Delaware-class machinery trials and industrial politics

The Delaware-class machinery comparison tested turbine efficiency while accommodating established triple-expansion interests.

Notes

The Delaware-class machinery comparison tested engineering performance inside a political compromise. Triple-expansion engines were mature, easier to build and maintain, and supported by established lobbying networks with congressional contacts. Turbines were the coming technology, yet early American installations did not always perform well, especially in smaller ships. Battleship installations were adequate from the start, though hardly exceptional. Earlier work with Turbinia helped Britain enter turbine development quickly and achieve better initial results. The choice depended on industrial capacity, maintenance experience, procurement politics, and measured efficiency.
