Chapter ยท 3:36:37-3:38:36

Night fighters bring carrier air defence after dark

Japanese night nuisance raids around Guadalcanal pushed the U.S. Navy toward radar-equipped night fighters, including combat-tested Corsairs.

Notes

The account shows how a single Japanese night raider over Guadalcanal could impose a serious psychological and operational burden when defenders lacked suitable aircraft. Admiral John McCain carried that experience into the Bureau of Aeronautics and pressed for a naval night-fighter capability. A radar-equipped twin-engine F7F Tigercat was under development, but the Navy needed an interim answer sooner. Five radar-equipped F4U Corsairs were therefore trained and sent to the Solomons for successful combat trials. The episode explains why early fast carriers entered combat without night fighters and how field experience accelerated a practical stopgap.
