An unprotected cruiser could defeat an auxiliary cruiser or comparable opponent under favourable conditions. A sufficiently well-armed example might even threaten a protected cruiser by scoring decisive hits early. The Velasco class instead combined small guns with no protection, removing both routes to survival. It could neither disable a stronger enemy quickly nor absorb enough return fire to remain in action.
