Britain planned to offset smaller carrier air groups by operating several carriers together. HMS Unicorn supported that approach as a forward aviation support ship. It supplied new aircraft and returned repaired aircraft to the Illustrious class. Keeping those aircraft available helped the armored carriers make the most of the air capacity their design allowed.
