Competition asks how an unbuilt treaty-era warship reaches World War II

The announced essay challenge follows one canceled capital ship or carrier conversion through construction, treaty survival, and wartime service.

Notes

Entrants may choose an unbuilt Washington-treaty-era capital ship or carrier conversion from any navy. They must explain why it is completed, how it survives the treaty settlements and interwar budget pressures, and what it does in the Second World War. A minimum length is intended to force treatment of the full chain from construction through wartime consequences. The exercise emphasizes sources and historically constrained alternate history rather than a free-form ship design detached from politics, industry, and naval strategy.
